Business Resources: Location

It's amazing what is available free or through your library membership to start or grow a business. Many people think of libraries full of little kids, but your tax money is used to purchase expensive databases...so use them!

Brick & Mortar

Home Office

  • If you are planning a home-based business, call the City of Charlotte Zoning Department (dial 311 or 704-336-7600 out of county) to make sure you conform to zoning regulations for that site.
  • If you live in a neighborhood with a Home Owner's Association, check to see what the rules are for running a business our of your home. There are often penalties if you break that legal contract.
  • Check with your Insurance Company to make sure your home business is covered. If you have equipment or products that get stolen or damaged, you want coverage. If a client gets injured, you want to be covered.

Permits

If any modifications are made to an existing facility to house your new business, building permits will be required. You can visit pages from Mecklenburg County (https://code.mecknc.gov/customer-tools) and the City of Charlotte (https://www.charlottenc.gov/Growth-and-Development/Planning-and-Development/Zoning/Permitting) to learn more about the support provided to customers. If you have any questions, call the City of Charlotte's Permit office at 704-336-3600 or Mecklenburg County's Permit office at 980-314-CODE(2633).
